Nagaland Deputy CM Yanthungo Patton Meets Jitendra Singh, Discusses Development and Connectivity
New Delhi, August 20, 2026: Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton, along with public representatives from Wokha district, met Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh to discuss key development issues concerning Nagaland and the wider North-Eastern region.
The meeting focused on connectivity, infrastructure, livelihoods and human-wildlife conflict, with particular attention to development requirements in Wokha and adjoining areas.
Dr Jitendra Singh said the North-East has witnessed significant transformation over the past twelve years, with sustained focus on connectivity, infrastructure and economic opportunities under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said improved road, rail, air, waterway and digital connectivity has brought the region closer to the national growth mainstream.
Highlighting the expansion of aviation infrastructure, Singh said the number of operational airports in the North-East has increased from nine in 2014 to 17 in 2026. He also noted that around 90 regional routes have been operationalised under the UDAN scheme, improving air connectivity between smaller towns, regional hubs and major cities.
The Minister also pointed to the expansion of inland waterways and digital infrastructure in the region, saying that better connectivity has improved access to markets, healthcare, education and employment while creating new opportunities for tourism, trade and investment.
During the meeting, the Nagaland delegation raised several specific issues concerning Wokha district. These included a proposal to declare the Wokha–Merapani road up to Golaghat as a National Highway, upgrading the Wokha–Bokajan road and developing infrastructure such as a District Office Complex, Multipurpose Market Complex, stadium and approach roads.
The delegation also highlighted road damage caused by erosion and landslides and its impact on transportation and economic activities in the area.
Human-elephant conflict in Wokha district was another major concern discussed during the meeting. The representatives highlighted crop and property damage as well as risks to the safety and livelihoods of local communities, and sought a comprehensive policy response for affected areas.
Dr Jitendra Singh said the issues raised would be considered as part of the broader effort to strengthen infrastructure and connectivity across the North-East. He emphasised that development should translate into better opportunities, stronger livelihoods and greater participation of the region in India's growth.
The meeting comes amid continued efforts to strengthen connectivity and development in the North-East, with the region being positioned as an important contributor to India's economic growth and the Act East policy.
