CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Inspects Tetelia Accident Site, Announces ₹5 Lakh Aid

Dispur, August 31, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday visited the site of the fatal road accident at Tetelia in Khetri and reviewed the situation following the incident that claimed seven lives.

The accident occurred on Sunday evening on National Highway 27, when a traveller travelling from Nagaon towards Guwahati collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction. Several people were also injured in the accident.

After inspecting the site, the Chief Minister announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the next of kin of the seven deceased. He also said that those injured and undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College Hospital would receive free medical treatment.

According to the preliminary police investigation, potholes on the National Highway contributed to the accident. CM Sarma directed the district administration to make immediate arrangements for repairing damaged portions of the highway and service road.

The Chief Minister said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had entrusted contractors with road maintenance responsibilities and alleged that the contractor concerned had failed to discharge its duties properly. He said the NHAI Chairman had assured that repairs would be undertaken at the earliest.

CM Sarma also stated that anyone found guilty in the police investigation would be dealt with according to law and assured that the State Government would take steps to prevent similar accidents in the future.

MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi, MLA Tapan Das, Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta, District Commissioner Swapnil Paul and other senior officials accompanied the Chief Minister during the inspection.
